Z Energy chief executive Mike Bennetts doesn’t hold back when it comes to a lack of government incentives for companies to produce environmentally friendly biodiesel here.

In a What’s On Their Mind video interview with Newsroom contributor Rod Oram, Bennetts says the “kind of dumb” policy ‘rankles me up a bit’.

While there are tax incentives to blend ethanol sourced from overseas into petrol, there is no similar incentive to produce biodiesel here using New Zealand tallow.

“It might make me look more green” to blend the petrol he said, but there was no gain for the country as the system involved burning carbon by shipping the ethanol here, to produce a low-carbon fuel.
