Helping Japanese consumers buy Big Macs could smooth the path to profitability for Auckland tech company, Plexure.

Previously known as VMob, Plexure has had a chequered history since it listed in 1985 and is yet to make a profit but its relationship with McDonald’s could prove transformational.

The company develops smart phone apps that connect customers and retail outlets in real time – a sort of uber for shops and shoppers.

The app it built for McDonald’s in Japan detects when a customer who has ordered a burger is a certain distance from the outlet, sparking the cooking process so it’s ready the moment they walk in the door.

Plexure’s CEO Craig Herbison is confident that other fast food operators will embrace the technology once they see it in action.

The company is due to report its annual result soon and Herbison says it has been cash flow positive for the last six months.
