South Auckland GP Dr Rawiri Jansen is clinical director at the National Hauora Coalition – one of the country’s largest Māori primary healthcare organisations.
Affiliated with more than 30 GP practices and an estimated 130,000 patients Jansen believes health funding must be funnelled into community services rather than hospitals.
Following the recent release of the Mental Health and Addictions inquiry report, he talks about how funding high-needs hospital services often happens at the expense of community care.
Suicide prevention services must be accessible to people before they get to hospital, close to their homes and communities, Jansen says.
