A University of Otago study has investigated the effects adventure recreation can have on physical and mental wellbeing.

One significant factor individuals reported as a motive to take part in adventure recreation was the state of ‘flow’ experienced when a person is completely immersed in an activity, making them feel like they are in complete control of what they are doing.
