Waikato Police Superintendent Bruce Bird said eight people were missing; 47 people went on to the island, five are confirmed dead and 31 are in hospital and three have been discharged.Among the injured or missing are Australians, Americans, Chinese, British and Malaysians, as well as New Zealanders.
2. Former Whakatane mayor Tony Bonne has confirmed a local tour guide was killed in the explosion. He says Hayden Marshall Inman had been a guide for White Island Tours for a number of years.
