The Black Ferns Sevens believe there’s only one worthy contender for the Halberg team of the year title – and this year it’s not them.

Speaking with Sports-A-Gender ahead of the team’s return to home soil for the World Seven Series in Hamilton, captain Sarah Hirini says the Silver Fern’s outstanding World Cup winning performance makes them the most worthy recipient of this year’s trophy.

Meanwhile over the ditch, which storyline will play out to the end in the women’s draw of the Australian Open? Can Serena Williams equal the record for the most Grand Slam victories? Will Naomi Osaka be able to repeat last year’s feats? Or, will the home favourite Ashleigh Barty end Australia’s 42-year title drought at Melbourne Park?

Also on Sports A-Gender this week, professional racing cyclist Ella Harris finishes as the best of the Kiwi cyclists in the Santos Women’s Tour Down Under in Adelaide, Nyrene Crowley gets a big signing, the Silver Ferns win on tour but at a cost and the Youth Winter Olympic games wraps up in Switzerland.
