The National Party says the Government needs to work with more urgency to mitigate the economic impact of the Covid-19 outbreak; and an aviation analyst is predicting more airlines could be forced to close as the industry struggles with the disruption caused by Covid-19.  

1.Trading in US shares was briefly suspended after sharp falls led to an automatic halt in the selling and buying of stocks. Once trading resumed, the three major US stock indexes were down over 6 percent. Oil prices plunge by 20 percent after Saudi Arabia launched a price war with Russia, hitting markets already reeling from fears of the impact of the coronavirus.

3.An aviation analyst is predicting more airlines could be forced to close as the industry struggles with the disruption caused by Covid-19. Yesterday, Air New Zealand scrapped it’s financial forecast and cut back services.    

4.Italy’s Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte says his country is dealing with its darkest hour.The death toll from Covid-19 has risen sharply again and now sits at 463.

5.The anti-smoking group ASH is decrying what it calls a deplorable waste of money by quit group the charity originally commissioned around quit line. Yesterday, RNZ revealed that five years after quit group ceased to function it continues to pay board members tens of thousands of dollars a year. 

6.Australia’s privacy regulator is taking Facebook to court over the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner said Facebook had seriously infringed the privacy of more than 300,000 Australians.

7.Actor Max Von Sydow, who appeared in films and TV series including The Exorcist, Flash Gordon and Game of Thrones, has died at the age of 90. His family announced “with a broken heart and infinite sadness” that the Swedish-born actor died on Sunday.
