Bernard Hickey talks to Kiwibank chief economist Jarrod Kerr about the latest weak business confidence figures and they hear from Oliver Hartwich about the Euro’s dire prospects
Bernard Hickey talks with Jarrod Kerr about the latest Covid-19 figures showing New Zealand’s hard and early lockdown appears to be controlling the growth of Covid-19 case numbers.
They also look at the latest New Zealand Institute of Economic Research’s Quarterly Survey of Business Opinion for the March quarter, much of which was completed before the lockdown began on March 26. It shows sharp drops in confidence.
Then Jarrod and Bernard talked to NZ Initiative executive director Oliver Hartwich about how the Euro-zone area and the European Union are handling the Covid-19 crises.
Oliver wrote this piece on The European Non-Union for Newsroom today, which he compares the EU to the final days of the Roman Empire.
“In the Western Roman Empire’s case, it was the barbarian soldier Odoacer who finished off the ruins of a once-proud Empire,” Hartwich wrote.
“In the EU’s case, the coronavirus seems on track to achieve the same result.”
This is part of a daily ‘Bernard and Jarrod Zoom out for Lunch’ webinar series during the lockdown.
