Kiwi triathlete Dr Hannah Wells simply could not be beaten in 2019.
The Tauranga-based professional triathlete finished off an astounding year with her victory in the pro women’s race of the Ironman 70.3 in Taupō, just two weeks after she won the Ironman 70.3 West Sydney race. In fact, she won every race she entered this year.
Wells could enjoy even more success in 2020, having decided to take time out from her career as a medical researcher to give triathlon “a decent crack”.
It was another week of victories and records for New Zealand athletes – the Black Ferns defending their Dubai Sevens title, the New Zealand track cycling team winning a swag of medals for their home crowd at the World Cup in Cambridge, and weightlifter Megan Signal setting two New Zealand records at the World Cup in China.
Coming up this weekend, Rio Olympics diver Lizzie Cui, home from her scholarship at Louisiana State University, is vying for another shot at the Olympics in the Oceania championships in Auckland, which doubles as a qualifier for Tokyo 2020. And the best of New Zealand’s netballers end their year with the Super Club finals in Nelson.
